Hot and humid in Montreal these days, and days like that I am missing the time i was up North, I can't support the heat, especially when humidity is adding to the feeling, I could move to Kuujjaak, but even there along the Ungava Bay, it's been overs 30 degrees for three days now, their first 'canicule' since weather records are taken, so I guess I have to try to refresh my mind as well as my memory with another Iceberg's pic.....

An Arctic Jaeger or Parasetic Jeager, I don't know if it is the North or scarcity of food but these birds are quite voracious, our cook when he tried to cook steaks on the BBQ had to intervene....these birds were trying to take away the meat, I don't know either if it was our cook with his tools up in the air, or the heat from the grill or just the heavyweight steak, but these attacks would always fail....on other occasion I saw a strange battle between Gulls and these Jaeger, but it was fierce in the air as on the ground, each giving each other strong beak hits, they were fighting over some frozen chicken we had to disposed off, their time was due and after a year they had to be put to the dump, quite a show.... 1984...Année rendue célèbre par Georges Orwell, c'est cette année là que la station de Mould Bay fût 'branché' pour la première fois en direct avec le Sud...enfin on pouvait avoir la télé, HBO, CBC North, enfin on pouvait écouter Dallas, Coronation Street de la BBC...gros hit sur l'heure du midi, du moins à Résolute Bay, moins ici à Mould Bay, donc en bref nous étions bien content d'accueillir notre 'Big Brother', version édulcorée....:) Ce que je me souviens le plus de cette installation est le courage du mécanicien, soudeur pour la cause, qui devait souder les pièces du support à mains nues, par un froid de -45 degrés...Celsius ou Fahrenheit, à cette température c'est du pareil au même, les deux sont identiques à -40.
1984...Emblematic year, make known by the same title novel of George Orwell, that year, for the first time, Mould Bay Weather Station was finally hooked to the South, now we could watch television, Dallas was big that year, and big in Mould Bay and Eureka too, BBC's Coronation Street was very popular in Resolute and at a lesser point in Mould Bay, ...but I have to mention about this dish installation the courage of the mechanic of the station, who had to weld the support of this thing by a temperature of -45 degrees, Celsius or Fahrenheit, at that point it doesn't matter, at -40 it is the same and he had to work bare hand....we had also to dig out of the snow some material left outside and frozen on the ground, could not work more than 15 or 20 minutes without getting inside and out again....
No, not something related to computers, but it was my first time in Resolute Bay airport, May 1983, and there in front of me they are loading an Hercules C-130 transport plane, I think, if I am not mistaken that this plane can carry up to 45,000 pounds or around 20,000 kilos of payload at maximum range, about 2,000 miles or 3,500 km. It is the work horse of the north, of course when it was possible we would use a boat, that was going up there once a year to bring supplies to the northern villages or other installations, but sometimes there was no other way than to fly our construction material on one of these, so at times Hercules, not the mythological being, or the movie, but the plane would be our way to go...:) Une autre photo noir et blanc de Munich, un jeu de contraste, rien de plus, rien de moins....
Another pic from Munich, contrast between lighted street and in the shade, nothing more, nothing less.....
Fooling around with a camera, can sometimes give some weird results, this one I wanted it that way, slow shutter speed, even if I had no tripod, but I had a bridge, a real one, the one over the Assiniboine River in Winnipeg, nearby my place, so trying to be as steady as possible, I was hoping for some 'Swishhh effect' can't think of a term for it now...:), but I am pretty sure that when this woman pushing her grocery cart passed me by, I am pretty sure she was going much faster than a few seconds before....:) I was often trying to photograph unusual pic when I was walking in town, and that place was still rather new to me, could barely speak english, I felt really like a strange being in a strange place...:), so the photo and the original one... Un parc quelque part à Vienne, honorant Amadeus Mozart...Ah Vienne tant de grands noms Mozart, Klimt, Schiele, Freud, Schönberg, Otto Wagner et le Jugnestil et bien sûr Conchita Wurst.... trouver l'erreur....:o
A park somewhere in Vienna, celebrating Amadeus Mozart...so many great names in Vienna, Mozart, Klimt, Schiele, Freud, Schönberg, Otto Wagner and the Jugenstil and of course more recently Conchita Wurst....oops...:O C'était dans la gare d'Hambourg, en novembre 1986, eh oui j'attendais un train vers Cologne, je me suis dit tiens pourquoi pas photographier le tableau des départs, je ne savais pas trop ce que cela donnerait, l'original était un peu terne, mon numériseur ne reconnaissait même pas le cadre de l'image...mais un peu de manipulations, et un peu de photoshop et voilà le résulat, j'aime les gares, ferrovières ou portuaires, ou les aérogares, partir....soupirs....) It was some day in November 1986, while waiting for a train in direction of Cologne, and it did cross my mind, why not trying to take a shot at the departure screen and some background, my scanner would not frame it correctly, it did not recognize it as a photo I guess...so a bit of forcing, and manipulations in photoshop gave me that photo, I like train station, or ferry boat station, or airports, they have something in common...leaving, travel....:) Donc bien sûr vous devinez sûrement que des photos d'Hambourg et de Cologne viendront élargir la collection...prochainement....
So if I was in Hamburg, going to Cologne, you probably are guessing that eventually I will post more pics of these two places...you're right, I just don't yet the timetable....:) C'est ce qu'on disait de Montréal, voilà quelques décennies, je ne sais plus si c'est encore le cas, mais cette photo, illustre l'emprise qu'avait l'église catholique sur Montréal et le Québec jusqu'à la fin des années soixante, du haut du clocher on sentait presque l’emprise qu'avait la religion sur le peuple, jeune j'ai été servant de messe, pas le choix, c'était obligatoire dans ma famille...ma première école, il y avait encore des Frères qui enseignaient, il y avait du bon et aussi du moins bon dans tout cela, enfin je n,ai pas l'intention de partir un débat religieux...tout simplement que cette photo fait resurgir un passé pas si lointain, mais tellement éloigné en même temps...le temps où on devait aller à la messe le premier vendredi du mois, faire le carême, se rappelier l'évangile ou l'épître du dimanche...mon père nous questionnait sur cela durant le dîner...
Not sure about the translation, but that's what Montreal was known for a while ago, the Catholic religion had a large say on the way people in Montreal and Quebec were living back to the late sixties, and there was always an impressive church, with the bell towers running pretty far above the surroundings, maybe a way to remind us that the church was overseeing us...in my youth, I had to be an altar boy, no choice there, my parents were quite involved with the our church...and it was kind of an obligation to do that, in my first year of school, there were still some Fathers teaching, soon after the school became a bit less under the church grasp but still very 'catholic', we had to go to church on the first Friday each month, the fasting period before Easter was much more respected, no meat on Fridays, and a house rule, my Father would question us during Sunday dinner about what was the Gospel topic or what the priest has talk about...not easy...so this pic kind of brought back a lot of that when I saw it again...
Every time winter would come back in Eureka, there was a high probability that some iceberg would be trapped in the fjord, that winter we were lucky, there was one almost on the door front of the station, figure of speech, it was about 20 minutes to walk there, although a frozen fjord could be a bit hazardous, no large holes, but enough to hurt an ankle or a knee, going through the snow that filled the jagged ice, but it was a worthwhile risk to take, a not so big risk after all, just have to be cautious, and that year no polar bear were sight nearby the station... |
