The only link we had at the time with the South, besides a plane or the boat that was coming once a year to the station, the satellite was lying just barely above the horizon...

Usually my photographs are not about people, seldom they will be in, but this time I thought they were adding something to it, maybe there would be more 'figurants' if I was surrounded by models wearing boots...but it is not often or actually never the case...so this time it was two of the carpenter's working on a renovation project in Eureka, in 1983, I was pretty 'green' on this job and they did show me a lot, after a few mnths there, I was happy to call them friends. Of course I could have used photoshop, like I did sometimes to remove unwanted things or...peoples, but this time they stayed in....
Sometimes, either getting on or off the plan, we were making some unusual encounter, like this curious fox approaching that strange form holding what seems to be a big funny eye, that us humans call a camera, I guess he felt he had to look upon this strange being, curious, and not affraid. I can't remember exactly where this shot was taken, probably Alert, the most northern site on Canadian soil, not really, but just a few kilometers away from here.... 1984 avait été un été pourri à Mould Bay,, mais parfois le soleil, qui au-dessus des nuages brille 24 heures sur 24 environ 6 mois par année, daignait enfin passer au travers des nuages ou en fait , ceux-ci parfois lui laissait le chemin libre....pour un photographe l'arctique est un paradis lorsque la lumière est là....je trouve toujours la lumière du début ou fin de journée plus intéressante et là-bas le soleil n'est jamais bien haut au-dessus de l'horizon, et parfois on avait même droit à un arc-en-ciel.....
1984 was a terrible summer in Mould Bay, but occasionnaly, the clouds would open a bit, not much, but at least the sun would shine on the station, at that time of the year and for close to six months it is shining 24 hrs on 24, but more than often it was on the clouds...another thing under those latitudes is that you always have the feeling that it is early or late in the day, light wise, good thing for a photographer like me who prefer the subdue lighting of these moments, up there you have it all the time, the sun is always low on the horizon just moving around...and that day on top of that, we were lucky enough to have a faint rainbow....
No it is not a future Swedish hockey player coming to play for the Montreal Canadians, but more like an island, between Mould Bay and Eureka, or Prince Patrick Island and Ellesmere Island in the Canadian arctic, of course you already know by now that it is another one of my old 'souvenirs' I know I must sound like an old man going through his vanished past and babbling about old stories...yes I am, but I do like these pictures...:) Chaud et humide à Montréal depuis quelques jours, pour moi qui n'ai aucune, mais aucune tolérance à la chaleur, ce sont des journées où j'aimerais retrouver le Nord....par contre aujourd'hui la météo annonce que même à Kuujjaak , au bord de la baie d'Ungava, il fait 30 degrés depuis 3 jours, leur première canicule enregistré depuis que des relevés météo y sont pris...donc je vais me rafraîchir virtuellement et la mémoire en publiant une autre photo de iceberg.....
Hot and humid in Montreal these days, and days like that I am missing the time i was up North, I can't support the heat, especially when humidity is adding to the feeling, I could move to Kuujjaak, but even there along the Ungava Bay, it's been overs 30 degrees for three days now, their first 'canicule' since weather records are taken, so I guess I have to try to refresh my mind as well as my memory with another Iceberg's pic..... 1984...Année rendue célèbre par Georges Orwell, c'est cette année là que la station de Mould Bay fût 'branché' pour la première fois en direct avec le Sud...enfin on pouvait avoir la télé, HBO, CBC North, enfin on pouvait écouter Dallas, Coronation Street de la BBC...gros hit sur l'heure du midi, du moins à Résolute Bay, moins ici à Mould Bay, donc en bref nous étions bien content d'accueillir notre 'Big Brother', version édulcorée....:) Ce que je me souviens le plus de cette installation est le courage du mécanicien, soudeur pour la cause, qui devait souder les pièces du support à mains nues, par un froid de -45 degrés...Celsius ou Fahrenheit, à cette température c'est du pareil au même, les deux sont identiques à -40.
1984...Emblematic year, make known by the same title novel of George Orwell, that year, for the first time, Mould Bay Weather Station was finally hooked to the South, now we could watch television, Dallas was big that year, and big in Mould Bay and Eureka too, BBC's Coronation Street was very popular in Resolute and at a lesser point in Mould Bay, ...but I have to mention about this dish installation the courage of the mechanic of the station, who had to weld the support of this thing by a temperature of -45 degrees, Celsius or Fahrenheit, at that point it doesn't matter, at -40 it is the same and he had to work bare hand....we had also to dig out of the snow some material left outside and frozen on the ground, could not work more than 15 or 20 minutes without getting inside and out again....
No, not something related to computers, but it was my first time in Resolute Bay airport, May 1983, and there in front of me they are loading an Hercules C-130 transport plane, I think, if I am not mistaken that this plane can carry up to 45,000 pounds or around 20,000 kilos of payload at maximum range, about 2,000 miles or 3,500 km. It is the work horse of the north, of course when it was possible we would use a boat, that was going up there once a year to bring supplies to the northern villages or other installations, but sometimes there was no other way than to fly our construction material on one of these, so at times Hercules, not the mythological being, or the movie, but the plane would be our way to go...:) A chaque venue de l'hiver lorsque le fjord gêle à Eureka, il y a de bonnes chances qu'un ou plusieurs iceberg s'y retrouvent figé jusqu'au printemps suivant, celui n'était pas trop loin de la station, une vingtaine de minutes de marche, par contre pas facile de marcher sur un fjord gelé, pas si plat que cela et parfois la neige cachait des trous pas trop profond, mais assez pour se tordre une cheville ou un genou...donc un peu de prudence mais le spectacle valait le faible risque...surotut que cette année là, aucun ours polaire n'avait été aperçu dans le coin...
Every time winter would come back in Eureka, there was a high probability that some iceberg would be trapped in the fjord, that winter we were lucky, there was one almost on the door front of the station, figure of speech, it was about 20 minutes to walk there, although a frozen fjord could be a bit hazardous, no large holes, but enough to hurt an ankle or a knee, going through the snow that filled the jagged ice, but it was a worthwhile risk to take, a not so big risk after all, just have to be cautious, and that year no polar bear were sight nearby the station... j'ai vu un 'Tweetty bird'...à moins que ce ne soit un ours polaire...un ours polaire en jaune...il doit être le meneur du tour de France, comme les moutons hier en Angleterre...ok je l'admets, je ne savais pas quoi écrire, donc un mélange de faits divers, apparemment il y avait des moutons teints en jaune lors de la première étape du Tour de France, dopés? on sait pas....et comme on l'avait tous lors de vols entre les stations, on avait le nez collé dans la fenêtre...et on faisait des oh des ah...et parfois on dormait...donc un de ces long moments, en vol quelque part au-dessus de l'arctique canadien...en 1984....je m'en souviens comme hier...enfin à peu près.....:)
I though I saw a pussy cat...or is it another plane or superman flying to his secret hide away in the North or Santa? ok I guess it is a polar bear...or I just did not know what to write about this picture...I could have write, like I did in the french version, that he was dressed in yellow, but this is not like the farmer who tainted his sheep in yellow to honor the beginning or first stage of the Tour the France, starting in England this year, no so no Tweety bird, no cat, no yellow polar bear, just another of these long moment flying in-between weather stations over the Canadian Arctic, and my boss pointing in the window about something, there was always a few things able to get out of us some...Awh, Look at that, Have you seen that, we are landing...but where is the f..... airstrip? |
