Early in March,, 1984, the sun has begun his coming back on this frozen land, the Canadian Arctic, for a few weeks now, it does come a bit more day by day, a few minutes at first and within 6 weeks, we pass from 24 hours darkness to 24 hours daylight, I never experienced a whole winter there, it is 4 months of complete darkness and deep freeze weather, though on the body, and the mind; but now spring is in the air, frigid air, -30, but at least a more luminous -30....

What is the relation between this photo of an husky dog and the title you may ask yourself, if you saw and remember a previous post you know, the link to this post, in short this dog was the ancient leader of the pack, his partner died, and he was sort of cast away by the rest of the pack, so it was always following us, maybe he wanted to be with us, or looking for our protection or simply staying as far as possible from the others dogs who were mean to him. I like this pic, I found it beautiful even if the situation wasn't... You may also wonder what is this funny stuff on the wall, it is an insulation material sprayed on the building, polyurethane foam, normally it is a pale yellow, but when left exposed without covering material, the sun made it turn to a dark orange color.
Winter is slowing showing is foregard here, maybe that's why I feel like putting one more pic from Mould Bay, it was still summer there, but that year summer up there felt more like late fall here....
In photo only, I am not going back myself, I guess I would like to go back, but not many chance of that happening, so this one is in Mould Bay, summer 1984, that year summer did not show up there, but many low light situation, skyies changing, fog , clouds, snow moving in and then the sun was there...this pic was very underexposed, try fixing it with some software, the result...
You will find a bit of everything on northern sites, like abandonned construction material, like those pipes...and sometimes they can be used again...this time for a picture....
1984 was a terrible summer in Mould Bay, but occasionnaly, the clouds would open a bit, not much, but at least the sun would shine on the station, at that time of the year and for close to six months it is shining 24 hrs on 24, but more than often it was on the clouds...another thing under those latitudes is that you always have the feeling that it is early or late in the day, light wise, good thing for a photographer like me who prefer the subdue lighting of these moments, up there you have it all the time, the sun is always low on the horizon just moving around...and that day on top of that, we were lucky enough to have a faint rainbow.... 1984...Année rendue célèbre par Georges Orwell, c'est cette année là que la station de Mould Bay fût 'branché' pour la première fois en direct avec le Sud...enfin on pouvait avoir la télé, HBO, CBC North, enfin on pouvait écouter Dallas, Coronation Street de la BBC...gros hit sur l'heure du midi, du moins à Résolute Bay, moins ici à Mould Bay, donc en bref nous étions bien content d'accueillir notre 'Big Brother', version édulcorée....:) Ce que je me souviens le plus de cette installation est le courage du mécanicien, soudeur pour la cause, qui devait souder les pièces du support à mains nues, par un froid de -45 degrés...Celsius ou Fahrenheit, à cette température c'est du pareil au même, les deux sont identiques à -40.
1984...Emblematic year, make known by the same title novel of George Orwell, that year, for the first time, Mould Bay Weather Station was finally hooked to the South, now we could watch television, Dallas was big that year, and big in Mould Bay and Eureka too, BBC's Coronation Street was very popular in Resolute and at a lesser point in Mould Bay, ...but I have to mention about this dish installation the courage of the mechanic of the station, who had to weld the support of this thing by a temperature of -45 degrees, Celsius or Fahrenheit, at that point it doesn't matter, at -40 it is the same and he had to work bare hand....we had also to dig out of the snow some material left outside and frozen on the ground, could not work more than 15 or 20 minutes without getting inside and out again....
No, not something related to computers, but it was my first time in Resolute Bay airport, May 1983, and there in front of me they are loading an Hercules C-130 transport plane, I think, if I am not mistaken that this plane can carry up to 45,000 pounds or around 20,000 kilos of payload at maximum range, about 2,000 miles or 3,500 km. It is the work horse of the north, of course when it was possible we would use a boat, that was going up there once a year to bring supplies to the northern villages or other installations, but sometimes there was no other way than to fly our construction material on one of these, so at times Hercules, not the mythological being, or the movie, but the plane would be our way to go...:) Une photo après la tempête de neige, rien d'inhabituel lorsqu'on est dans le nord, sauf que cette photo a été prise en juillet 1984, la télé satellite nous donnait 32 degrées celcius à Toronto, à Mould Bay il faisait -6, le matin lorsque je suis sorti de la baraque, une bourrasque de vent m'avait fait me demander si je rêvais, je croyais avoir reçu de la neige au visage, et c'était le spectacle qui s'offrait à nous quelques heures plus tard, le calme était revenu, et la neige recouvrait de nouveau le sol , le court été arctique, où on a tout-de-même deux ou trois mois sans neige avec de petites fleurs un peu partout, prenait une pause cette journée là....
A photo after the storm has left, nothing special for a weather station up in the arctic, but it was July 1984, it was 32 degrees celcius in Toronto, warm and humid, here in Mould Bay it was minus 6, usually we have a few months where the snow is gone, little flowers grow and it does look like a cool , but sunny summer...more like spring....but this day the short live arctic summer took a break....and that morning when I did push the heavy door of our barrack I though I wasn't quite awake when I felt something like blowing snow in my face.... |
