Usually I do not crop my photo, but this time I felt it was better to do so, but I always play with contrast, tone and change the color temperature in some areas, warmer or colder, besides contrast and of course removing, as much as I can do, speckles and dust marks that are still there after wiping the neg or slide...another one from Cherbourg Port, but I though that the tie mooring, not sure how we call those big thing used to tie a boat to the pier...was way too big and obvious, and the boat was not, so I did try to correct that, so the corrected pic and also the original one.

As I did mentioned in a previous post, in Normandy, in fact in Cherbourg, I bought a bike, the first few weeks I did not covered much distance, probably the beautiful place, not to far away one from another, the charming peoples I met along the road, and the I finally got to Genêts, near Avranches, on the other side of the bay from Mont-Saint-Michel, which sometimes we could see from there. And then a fellow cyclist suggest that I do change my way of riding my bike, he said it would be much more easier to cover a greater distance....I guess a photo would illustrate much better what he told me to correct....
It was early July, in 1986...and since I stayed there a few weeks, leaving July 15, it could be the anniversary day today...28 years ago....young, at least younger, and crazy...some things stays the same....
It's been like a month I arrived in Amsterdam, late May 1986, took trains to The Hague, Rotterdam, Bruxelles, Brugg, Paris and finally Cherbourg, and I told myself, probably sitting in a bistro, that I had to find a way to travel more freely, you can see partly the choice I made, bought a bicycle in Cherbourg, by the way, eventually I should come across some pics from the places I mention earlier...in the meantime, this one was taken alongside a quiet road in Normandy, not far from the coast.... I must admit I am attracted to planes, boats, and consequently to airport and port, can't say I did use them extensively, except for a period of 5 years, but I always like walking along ports, maybe because as airports are, they are a gateway to others place, somewhere else...and a door to feeling a change of scene, although I don't want it to be too drastic, I feel more comfortable if I can read the alphabet, even if the language is unknown to me, and usually french, English and a bit of German does help you getting around, at least Europe, so all of this to came to say that this is the Cherbourg's Port, I kind of escape Paris...too hot and busy, I wanted to go to Bretagne, went to the wrong train station and end up in Chergbourg, it was what I needed, cooler, calmer...
Aznavour did sing about the umbrellas in Cherbourg, but me, I only found a port, some bistros, a youth hostel and a cycling shop where I bought a bicycle....
For somebody like me, born in a 'young country, Quebec or North America, the first thing that impress us is the age of some of the buildings and construction you do find anywhere in Europe, most of these were build before Europeans arrived in North America, except for the Vikings who sailed to Newfoundland around 950 A.D, so i guess it is why the first few days I was travelling on my bike ou train, I took so many photographs, like this one, an old church build well before french settlers came to Québec, this one is in Normandy, la pointe du contentin, and as I read in some place, the front of the church was facing the sea, here the English Channel, for the safe return of the sailors I think, or to remember those lost to the sea.
I don't know why, but to me Normandy is more like bucolic landscape, not many industries, of course there is a large port in Cherbourg, but from the top of the stairs I did not anticipate to see big cranes, like the ones we see in most of seaport, I admit it is not Hamburg, or Rotterdam but I wasn't expecting to see something else than a marina, or something where small boats are coming, maybe it is not a large one, actually I did not walk up to there, so a distant view of wharf cranes, still in Granville, if I'm not wrong or my memory isn't playing tricks to me...
Walking on the shore of Mont Saint-Michel baie by an early July night in 1986, I saw the sun going down into the Bay, and suddenly all that hostel windows seems to glow, ok not all of them, but the ones on the first floor, I thought taking a picture, not knowing if it would be for the sake a making a good pic, or as I often do, taking a photo, not thinking if it will make a good one, but more like taking shots that I can use for a painting, finally I think it can work for both...I am just wondering how I could set up a model wearing boots in this one...maybe I could just paint a landscape, or skyscape, or windowscape...and I certainly not consider at that time that I would use this for a post on the internet, from a computer, at that time, 1986, I already spoke french and english but not computer language...:) or windows...or weebly, wordpress and others.. so here's those windows reflections and I will stop my own reflections on this topic...
That day I was cycling along the road that run around the Baie du Mont Saint-Michel, and for the first, stopping for a bite, a bit of water, and taking photos, I notice it for the first time, coming out of the haze at the horizon, with a lonely tree counterpoising it...the road is wandering along the Bay, so it is still a good ride to get there, I though I would stop overnight at Genêts, a little village, 500 inhabitants, 5 bistro, 2 'buvettes' but more on this in a later post when I will get to the pics taken there, I did not stayed overnight.... It was in June 1986 that I landed in Normandy, all alone, armed with my train ticket, that was changed in a bicycle, un vélo...and left Cherbourg, with not one terrorist around, that year, 1986, Khadafi was scaring the hell out of tourists, and to the great dismay of the director of the Youth Hostel, was also scaring lot of tourist who had booked to his Hostel, and he was mad...so I left and finally got to the USA?
In fact it was an hostel, arboring a single american flag, by the Baie du Mont Saint-Michel, I think it was Danville, but it could be Agoncoutainville or Barneville...these names I noted in my litte not black but blue book, each day where I was...now months later I know , it was Granville, thanks to the help of Marion, see comments down below, he own the land adjacent to the hotel and he did contact me to let me know, thanks!. |
