Jaywalking...typiquement montréalais

​On dit qu’au Canada, Montréal est la capitale du jaywalking, expression anglaise qui signifie traverser malgré un feu rouge, pas de traduction adéquate ou d’expression montréalaise pour cela, cela doit faire partie de l’ADN montréalais, pas besoin d’expression :); c’était mes premiers jours à Winnipeg, non pas cette photo, je n’ai pas pris de selfie ou autoportrait, c’était en 1982…ma surprise a été totale lorsque en traversant sur un feu rouge, petite rue, tard en soirée, pas de trafic, rien, j’entends un ‘hey you, what do you think you are doing…je me retourne en me disant ‘qu’est ce que tu veux toé, hostie’…je traduis poliment ‘que voulez vous messieurs’…je me rends compte que ce sont deux imposants policiers de la ville de Winnipeg, je me suis fait penaud, à mon fort accent en anglais, ils ont peut-être compris que je venais du Québec, je m’en suis tiré avec un avertissement verbal…assez bien senti…et sur le ton, ne recommence pas sinon….:) Par contre le bon côté est que seulement à poser le pied dans la rue, même un grand boulevard à 6 voies, toutes les voitures s’immobilisent instantanément..même celles de l’autre côté du terre plein, ne jamais tenter cela à Montréal….

It does seems that here in Montreal, jaywalking is something incorporated into the Montrealers ADN, I cannot even think about a good expression in quebecois french to translate it…no need to have an expression it seems…You can imagine my surprise, first few days for me in 1982, I arrived in Winnipeg a few days ago, walking downtown around 9 pm…no trafic, nothing, so I did crossed a small street, on a don’t walk sign or red trafic light, a bit like the one shown in the pic, but it was late, nothing around, and I hear a deep ‘Hey you what you think your are doing’, I was going to answer on what it is up to you than I realize those two imposing policemen….maybe hearing my stong french accent they did understood I was new in town, so I was only given a verbal advice not to do it again, and that don’t walk really mean don’t cross even if there is nothing at all around…lesson learned…the good side of it was that putting a foot on the pavement on a large boulevard, all cars would stop, even those on the other side of a six lanes road, don’t try that in Montreal…
