Hot and humid in Montreal these days, and days like that I am missing the time i was up North, I can't support the heat, especially when humidity is adding to the feeling, I could move to Kuujjaak, but even there along the Ungava Bay, it's been overs 30 degrees for three days now, their first 'canicule' since weather records are taken, so I guess I have to try to refresh my mind as well as my memory with another Iceberg's pic.....

An Arctic Jaeger or Parasetic Jeager, I don't know if it is the North or scarcity of food but these birds are quite voracious, our cook when he tried to cook steaks on the BBQ had to intervene....these birds were trying to take away the meat, I don't know either if it was our cook with his tools up in the air, or the heat from the grill or just the heavyweight steak, but these attacks would always fail....on other occasion I saw a strange battle between Gulls and these Jaeger, but it was fierce in the air as on the ground, each giving each other strong beak hits, they were fighting over some frozen chicken we had to disposed off, their time was due and after a year they had to be put to the dump, quite a show.... 1984...Année rendue célèbre par Georges Orwell, c'est cette année là que la station de Mould Bay fût 'branché' pour la première fois en direct avec le Sud...enfin on pouvait avoir la télé, HBO, CBC North, enfin on pouvait écouter Dallas, Coronation Street de la BBC...gros hit sur l'heure du midi, du moins à Résolute Bay, moins ici à Mould Bay, donc en bref nous étions bien content d'accueillir notre 'Big Brother', version édulcorée....:) Ce que je me souviens le plus de cette installation est le courage du mécanicien, soudeur pour la cause, qui devait souder les pièces du support à mains nues, par un froid de -45 degrés...Celsius ou Fahrenheit, à cette température c'est du pareil au même, les deux sont identiques à -40.
1984...Emblematic year, make known by the same title novel of George Orwell, that year, for the first time, Mould Bay Weather Station was finally hooked to the South, now we could watch television, Dallas was big that year, and big in Mould Bay and Eureka too, BBC's Coronation Street was very popular in Resolute and at a lesser point in Mould Bay, ...but I have to mention about this dish installation the courage of the mechanic of the station, who had to weld the support of this thing by a temperature of -45 degrees, Celsius or Fahrenheit, at that point it doesn't matter, at -40 it is the same and he had to work bare hand....we had also to dig out of the snow some material left outside and frozen on the ground, could not work more than 15 or 20 minutes without getting inside and out again....
No, not something related to computers, but it was my first time in Resolute Bay airport, May 1983, and there in front of me they are loading an Hercules C-130 transport plane, I think, if I am not mistaken that this plane can carry up to 45,000 pounds or around 20,000 kilos of payload at maximum range, about 2,000 miles or 3,500 km. It is the work horse of the north, of course when it was possible we would use a boat, that was going up there once a year to bring supplies to the northern villages or other installations, but sometimes there was no other way than to fly our construction material on one of these, so at times Hercules, not the mythological being, or the movie, but the plane would be our way to go...:) A chaque venue de l'hiver lorsque le fjord gêle à Eureka, il y a de bonnes chances qu'un ou plusieurs iceberg s'y retrouvent figé jusqu'au printemps suivant, celui n'était pas trop loin de la station, une vingtaine de minutes de marche, par contre pas facile de marcher sur un fjord gelé, pas si plat que cela et parfois la neige cachait des trous pas trop profond, mais assez pour se tordre une cheville ou un genou...donc un peu de prudence mais le spectacle valait le faible risque...surotut que cette année là, aucun ours polaire n'avait été aperçu dans le coin...
Every time winter would come back in Eureka, there was a high probability that some iceberg would be trapped in the fjord, that winter we were lucky, there was one almost on the door front of the station, figure of speech, it was about 20 minutes to walk there, although a frozen fjord could be a bit hazardous, no large holes, but enough to hurt an ankle or a knee, going through the snow that filled the jagged ice, but it was a worthwhile risk to take, a not so big risk after all, just have to be cautious, and that year no polar bear were sight nearby the station... No, I am not writing about me, but rather this lonely wolf on the photo, that photo was taken during a trip around the station, to the dump exactly, not the most beautiful site, but wolves living nearby the station, love it, especially the cook had to trow out to the garbage, old weak muskox could be a feast for them , but not easy to find, the garbage from the station kitchen were much more appreciated... But it is not entirely true, he is alone on this pic, but his buddies aren't far away, on a next photo will see...
I though I saw a pussy cat...or is it another plane or superman flying to his secret hide away in the North or Santa? ok I guess it is a polar bear...or I just did not know what to write about this picture...I could have write, like I did in the french version, that he was dressed in yellow, but this is not like the farmer who tainted his sheep in yellow to honor the beginning or first stage of the Tour the France, starting in England this year, no so no Tweety bird, no cat, no yellow polar bear, just another of these long moment flying in-between weather stations over the Canadian Arctic, and my boss pointing in the window about something, there was always a few things able to get out of us some...Awh, Look at that, Have you seen that, we are landing...but where is the f..... airstrip?
A photo after the storm has left, nothing special for a weather station up in the arctic, but it was July 1984, it was 32 degrees celcius in Toronto, warm and humid, here in Mould Bay it was minus 6, usually we have a few months where the snow is gone, little flowers grow and it does look like a cool , but sunny summer...more like spring....but this day the short live arctic summer took a break....and that morning when I did push the heavy door of our barrack I though I wasn't quite awake when I felt something like blowing snow in my face....
May as well keep going on with this morning post and flight, actually I am not sure if we were landing or taking off, but on this pic you can see the reason why we had to go there, a weather station, part of the international high atmosphere study network, twice a day , a weather balloon, inflated with hydrogen would be launched and while it went up to 100 km high into the atmosphere, it was relaying all kinds of meteorological data, which would be used to make long term weather forecast by studying how the Jet Stream was behaving. For my part I did not go to this particular station often, in fact this was the only time, this one was 'too south' for us to take in a crew, the Inuit administration was taking care of building and road maintenance, we would go there for the equipment, and this was not my field of expertise, in fact I am not sure what was my field of expertise...I was there to plan the work, do a bit of measuring, taking notes, answering crew men questions, helping them if I can, so I guess I was a bit of a Jack of all trades, and expert in none, so sometimes I just took pictures, just for the fun of being there and feeling very lucky to be there. Going south could be quite a relative thing, when you leave Eureka or Resolute Bay, and going to Baker Lake for example, and the first look I had on this place was in march 1984, from the window of the Twin Otter, I could see these houses who seems to be battered by the strong winds blowing toward Hudson's Bay, not quite the south vista that travel agency put on their posters to attract tourist....but I though that it could make a nice photo and give a sense of the isolation of those northern villages...
May as well put a map, if you're like me, before going there, I would not have know where the hell is Baker Lake, so maybe it does give you the general idea, it is north.... |
