Not the same shooting direction, but two photos of the fjord laying in front of the station, a weather station in Eureka, Nunavut, this first one was taken in May 1983, with a -15 Celsius temperature, not quite springtime yet, at least for us 'southerners', but the sun is already up 24 hrs a day, for a few weeks already...
And one more taken the same year but in July, temperature was probably around 7-8 celcius, nice weather for some leisure time on the beach, a light jacket was enough, but no need really for a bathing suit...

Very strange, this blue sky on Mars, isn't it? It is better to read the previous post, to follow this story...
No, not a seagull as well known or special as Jonathan Livingston the Seagull, just an ordinary seagull living near Eureka, up north, although they were fierce fighters, sometimes with the Jaegers, or even with our cook, those rare days where he was able to cook some steaks on the BBQ, him and his seagulls friends would try to snatch the steaks off the BBQ hot grill, and take off with the meat, the cook was waving them away with his knifes and long forks...a real show, but not as good as the one we had when we had to dump some old frozen chicken to the dump, there was a real battle between the Jeagers and the Seagull, each one trying to make the other loose his precious deep frozen prey....
In the middle of summer, the fjord in front of the station is magnificient, so are the Sawtooth Mountains, clearly visible on a beautiful day or night, at that time of the year, up there, it does matter, and I remember we had many nice days where the temperature was just right, for those latitudes, 8-10 degrees Celsius, not much wind, so we could enjoy the scene comfortably sitting along the shore..of course there is also, as almost on any site up North, 'leftovers'...like those tractor belts, chenille in french, at least that was I think it is...it is also the North, beautiful sights and debris....
A creek is running close to the station, when the snow is melting, it does provide the water supply, partly, for the station, and since It is not a major waterway, it is unnamed, so to us it was 'Station Creek'....so a picture of the creek flowing into the larger Fjord by the station.
Under this strange dome, lay a radar who his sole purpose it to track weather balloons that are launch twice a day, all around the globe at the same time, these weather help tracking the jet stream, and by doing so, help meteorologists to prepare their forecast, me I was there just to look over the work that would be done next summer, it was May 1983, 'Spring Break' in Eureka...with a mild -20 Celsius...:) Évidemment, ils ne se sont pas rencontrés....tous les deux s'en sont bien sortis, le iceberg intact et immobilisé dans la glace, l'hélico, ben il a fait ce qu'il est supposé faire, continuer son vol, heureusement pour les occupants...je n'ai jamais eu l'occasion de monter dans un hélico, j'imagine que cela n'arrivera pas non plus...
Of course they did not 'meet', both went their way, at least for the helicopter, who kept flying, and the helico occupants were probably quite happy with that, as for the iceberg, eventually it will follow its journey but not befor a few months, in the meantime it did stayed stuck in the ice.... Close to the station there is many nice valleys and mountains, this place is almost a paradise, a cold one, but nonetheless, you do have a nice feeling being out there to look at something not many peoples will have the chance to see, and when you get tired of this there is always the possibility to stroll along the Fjord coast, of course after a few months, you start missing south and home, but still this is a beautiful place. In the meantime, one of my collegue and friend was taking a short rest, while i was shooting all around.
The only link we had at the time with the South, besides a plane or the boat that was coming once a year to the station, the satellite was lying just barely above the horizon...
This is where the Fjord in front of Eureka Weather Station was joining with a larger one, I can't find the name of it, but it was open on the south, where low on the horizon, the junction with a satellite would connect the station to the rest of the world, the dish was installed there, about 10 km from the station, and each time we did ride to this place, we were getting a nice show offered by waters and clouds, and the occasional Iceberg....and it was changing from quarter to quarter of an hour.... |
