Usually my photographs are not about people, seldom they will be in, but this time I thought they were adding something to it, maybe there would be more 'figurants' if I was surrounded by models wearing boots...but it is not often or actually never the case...so this time it was two of the carpenter's working on a renovation project in Eureka, in 1983, I was pretty 'green' on this job and they did show me a lot, after a few mnths there, I was happy to call them friends. Of course I could have used photoshop, like I did sometimes to remove unwanted things or...peoples, but this time they stayed in....

Hot and humid in Montreal these days, and days like that I am missing the time i was up North, I can't support the heat, especially when humidity is adding to the feeling, I could move to Kuujjaak, but even there along the Ungava Bay, it's been overs 30 degrees for three days now, their first 'canicule' since weather records are taken, so I guess I have to try to refresh my mind as well as my memory with another Iceberg's pic.....
No, not something related to computers, but it was my first time in Resolute Bay airport, May 1983, and there in front of me they are loading an Hercules C-130 transport plane, I think, if I am not mistaken that this plane can carry up to 45,000 pounds or around 20,000 kilos of payload at maximum range, about 2,000 miles or 3,500 km. It is the work horse of the north, of course when it was possible we would use a boat, that was going up there once a year to bring supplies to the northern villages or other installations, but sometimes there was no other way than to fly our construction material on one of these, so at times Hercules, not the mythological being, or the movie, but the plane would be our way to go...:) A chaque venue de l'hiver lorsque le fjord gêle à Eureka, il y a de bonnes chances qu'un ou plusieurs iceberg s'y retrouvent figé jusqu'au printemps suivant, celui n'était pas trop loin de la station, une vingtaine de minutes de marche, par contre pas facile de marcher sur un fjord gelé, pas si plat que cela et parfois la neige cachait des trous pas trop profond, mais assez pour se tordre une cheville ou un genou...donc un peu de prudence mais le spectacle valait le faible risque...surotut que cette année là, aucun ours polaire n'avait été aperçu dans le coin...
Every time winter would come back in Eureka, there was a high probability that some iceberg would be trapped in the fjord, that winter we were lucky, there was one almost on the door front of the station, figure of speech, it was about 20 minutes to walk there, although a frozen fjord could be a bit hazardous, no large holes, but enough to hurt an ankle or a knee, going through the snow that filled the jagged ice, but it was a worthwhile risk to take, a not so big risk after all, just have to be cautious, and that year no polar bear were sight nearby the station... No, I am not writing about me, but rather this lonely wolf on the photo, that photo was taken during a trip around the station, to the dump exactly, not the most beautiful site, but wolves living nearby the station, love it, especially the cook had to trow out to the garbage, old weak muskox could be a feast for them , but not easy to find, the garbage from the station kitchen were much more appreciated... But it is not entirely true, he is alone on this pic, but his buddies aren't far away, on a next photo will see...
There was some of those days, and up there they can last up to six months, or is it these days?, this is one of the English language fine detail I had and will never master I guess, but I am french so I guess this is ok...., so back to this day, that maybe, the only thing I could though is, 'Kriss, faut que je parte d'icitte...' translated from french quebecois as 'put in the swear of your choice' and ... I got to get out of here....!!!!' Honestly, thirty years later I can't tell what was my mood on that day, maybe I just want to go away, or maybe I was thankful for being there and enjoying something very few people had the opportunity to live...or maybe you can imagine something similar to John Carpenter The Thing' movie's...and on that helicopter is a mad man trying to shoot a dog...but of course it is not a dog, just a dangerous polymorph extra-terrestrial entity escaping the station, but as an extraterrestrial being marooned on this planet for a while, I don't think it is the case, at least it is not from a known species on my planet...:) C'est le nom de la chaîne de montagnes que l'on aperçoit en arrivant à Eureka, au Nunavut, elles sont à l'est de la station à environ 60 km si ma mémoire est bonne...elles offrent un spectacle magnifique, que ne rend malheureusement pas tout-à -fait ce cliché pris de la fenêtre du Twin Otter qui nous amenait à la station. It is the name of the mountain range that is about 60 km east of Eureka, in Nunavut, they are quite magnificent, although we never did flew directly over them, unfortunately this photo, taken from the window of the Twin Otter that was taking us to the station doesn't really show how beautiful the sight was. I probably do have other slides not yet scanned, that show them under better conditions, in the meantime I have this one photo to show... Plus d'infos, mais pas beaucoup plus ...More informations here but not much more...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawtooth_Range_(Nunavut)
A good thing about the North is that you don’t have to go far to get some ice for your Canadian Club rye whyskey…and since the drinking water was precious and had to be conserved until late may when the snow start melting, we were contributing to the effort to rationalize the water consumption…:) so I was part of this 3 members team that went that day for the chipping of our finest ice cube for our whiskey…I am the shadow holding, you have to guess it, the camera… And unlike those unfortunate seamens and passagers that perish after meeting an iceberg, us we were just happy to jump on it…
When I saw this picture, a movie came up to my mind, a movie from 1983, about the same time I took this photo in Eureka, the movie title is 'Never Cry Wolf', if you feel like knowing more on this wonderful, to me at least, movie, here's a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Never_Cry_Wolf_(film). but unlike in the movie, they had not to work so hard for their food, there was plenty leftovers in the dump.... When you go up North the first time, lot of things are impressive, the desert look, cold , moutains, fjord, the bright sun 24 hrs a day, at the time I went the first time, and the first local inhabitants I saw, the artic hares, huge from their thick fur, but what do they eat? Not much around that seems good for them...I don't know Mes photos originales sont en couleur, mais une était tellement bleutée, que j'ai décidé de la transformer en noir et blanc...aussi commencé à utiliser Lightroom de Adobe, mais je dois me familiariser avec ce logiciel, donc une autre version de ce lièvre.
All my slides are in color, but one was so badly exposed it was dark and blue, that I decided to transform it in black and white, the top one is in photoshop, the next was modified in Lightroom, I have to learn more about that software, I'm not sure what is the diffence between photoshop and Lightroom, the later one seems to have a few more tools for publishing, like making a book, have to look in to it more.... |
