There was some of those days, and up there they can last up to six months, or is it these days?, this is one of the English language fine detail I had and will never master I guess, but I am french so I guess this is ok...., so back to this day, that maybe, the only thing I could though is, 'Kriss, faut que je parte d'icitte...' translated from french quebecois as 'put in the swear of your choice' and ... I got to get out of here....!!!!' Honestly, thirty years later I can't tell what was my mood on that day, maybe I just want to go away, or maybe I was thankful for being there and enjoying something very few people had the opportunity to live...or maybe you can imagine something similar to John Carpenter The Thing' movie's...and on that helicopter is a mad man trying to shoot a dog...but of course it is not a dog, just a dangerous polymorph extra-terrestrial entity escaping the station, but as an extraterrestrial being marooned on this planet for a while, I don't think it is the case, at least it is not from a known species on my planet...:)

May as well keep going on with this morning post and flight, actually I am not sure if we were landing or taking off, but on this pic you can see the reason why we had to go there, a weather station, part of the international high atmosphere study network, twice a day , a weather balloon, inflated with hydrogen would be launched and while it went up to 100 km high into the atmosphere, it was relaying all kinds of meteorological data, which would be used to make long term weather forecast by studying how the Jet Stream was behaving. For my part I did not go to this particular station often, in fact this was the only time, this one was 'too south' for us to take in a crew, the Inuit administration was taking care of building and road maintenance, we would go there for the equipment, and this was not my field of expertise, in fact I am not sure what was my field of expertise...I was there to plan the work, do a bit of measuring, taking notes, answering crew men questions, helping them if I can, so I guess I was a bit of a Jack of all trades, and expert in none, so sometimes I just took pictures, just for the fun of being there and feeling very lucky to be there. A good thing about the North is that you don’t have to go far to get some ice for your Canadian Club rye whyskey…and since the drinking water was precious and had to be conserved until late may when the snow start melting, we were contributing to the effort to rationalize the water consumption…:) so I was part of this 3 members team that went that day for the chipping of our finest ice cube for our whiskey…I am the shadow holding, you have to guess it, the camera… And unlike those unfortunate seamens and passagers that perish after meeting an iceberg, us we were just happy to jump on it…
Another pic taken from an airplane window, this time aboard a 'Twin Otter' the workhorse of the North, this plane could go anywhere, almost, it is almost floating in the air...so we were flying to or from Eureka, night flight for most of the time, it was early February and up to these latitudes, the sun just start coming up, it was 4 months of total darkness in Eureka, the first day it rises, it did stay for 15 minutes and the sun was gone, until the next day, it would take 6 weeks going from 24 hrs night to 24 hrs daylight...but that day since it went so fast we run after it, actually flew, chasing it....of course we were going to some other exotic place like Mould Bay, Resolute Bay or Alert...
A group of 'southern tourists' in awe in front of an Inuksuk, the funny thing about this one is that it was built by a group of Canadian soldiers in training there, and besides the Inuits residing in Resolute, were taken from other villages, from Baffin Island I believe, and brought in Resolute between 1952 and 1955, the first settlement there was a joint US-Canada weather station in 1947, that photo was taken on my first trip out there in May 1983... When you go up North the first time, lot of things are impressive, the desert look, cold , moutains, fjord, the bright sun 24 hrs a day, at the time I went the first time, and the first local inhabitants I saw, the artic hares, huge from their thick fur, but what do they eat? Not much around that seems good for them...I don't know Mes photos originales sont en couleur, mais une était tellement bleutée, que j'ai décidé de la transformer en noir et blanc...aussi commencé à utiliser Lightroom de Adobe, mais je dois me familiariser avec ce logiciel, donc une autre version de ce lièvre.
All my slides are in color, but one was so badly exposed it was dark and blue, that I decided to transform it in black and white, the top one is in photoshop, the next was modified in Lightroom, I have to learn more about that software, I'm not sure what is the diffence between photoshop and Lightroom, the later one seems to have a few more tools for publishing, like making a book, have to look in to it more.... I still dusting off my slides, literately...will have lot of work with photoshop, even if the 'Ice technology' of Epson does some work on that, so these were taken in May 1983, my first trip to the Great White North, up to Resolute bay , and further to Eureka, Northwest Territories, now known as Nunavut. I am still trying to figure out exactly where those pics were taken, I am sure about a few ones, others are a bit in the mist of my memory...1983 is a bit far, I took some notes then, but haven't found them yet, probably I will never do, so have to rely on my sometimes sketchy memory.... More pics will be shown, but the chronological order is a bit, a lot, messed up, I did found most of my slides, I used to keep them numbered, notes taken, but all of this is gone, so it will be like a movie with a lot of flashback or forward...and the next stop, after Resolute Bay airport was the Eureka weather station. right in the middle of Ellesmere Island, next to Greenland...way up North, in fact at this point a compass would point due west.... at least in 1983, it is always moving so right now I'm not sure where it is really.....
The Canon and the fort....it was 1983, at the height of the Cold War, so if first Secretary then, Antropov, was to send in the Red Army, Canada was on guard to keep them off...:) but I think it is more like the kind of humorous things you do find in most of the northern posts...a bit of humour does help to keep the hearth and the rest warm...:) Peut-être aussi que des cartes tirées de Google Map illustreraient bien où sont situés ces endroits... I though that maybe a location map of these sites would be useful...to get a sense of where are these places... |
