Another street scene, taken end of November 1981, trace of the first snow still on the ground, this is East-End Montreal, at the limit of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rosemont, part of Montreal, working class type area, now being slowly 'gentrified', so just an ordinary street scene, nothing special....

Another one of those old photos, it was in Montreal, autumn 1981, kind of difficult to render it in photoshop the way I saw it when I took this picture...at least the way I think I saw it then, long time ago...
And then I thought it's been a long time I did not try some montage in photoshop, I was seeing a photo of a model whose pose would match, more or less the tree trunk...found one, could have look more, but I choose that one, and then I figure that maybe she would like to pose with her own reflection...the result, another painting coming, I think...
A 30 years span between these two pics, similar in a way, photos taken from the appartment backdoor, the first one in 1981, in Montreal, district Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, a rather gloomy surrounding, a backstreet alley, a parking lot, some kind of manufacture, I had good time there but not because of the view....:). The second one was taken in 2011, the place I live now, for the last 25 years...of course it is night, you don't see the well maintained backyard, trees, plants, flowers, a quiet place, still have lot of fun living here, and this time the view does bring a bit to it....
Not sure about the translation, but that's what Montreal was known for a while ago, the Catholic religion had a large say on the way people in Montreal and Quebec were living back to the late sixties, and there was always an impressive church, with the bell towers running pretty far above the surroundings, maybe a way to remind us that the church was overseeing us...in my youth, I had to be an altar boy, no choice there, my parents were quite involved with the our church...and it was kind of an obligation to do that, in my first year of school, there were still some Fathers teaching, soon after the school became a bit less under the church grasp but still very 'catholic', we had to go to church on the first Friday each month, the fasting period before Easter was much more respected, no meat on Fridays, and a house rule, my Father would question us during Sunday dinner about what was the Gospel topic or what the priest has talk about...not easy...so this pic kind of brought back a lot of that when I saw it again...
Eventually I should return and photograph areas I did photograph in the 70-80's, probably like there, I would see lot of changes, like here, the large shop is gone, the bar too, now it is an old folks residence, a brand new neighborhood has been built, grocery and liquor store, and a CLSC, some health center we have here in Quebec, but don't go there if you're sick, it close at 8 PM...have to be sick from 7 AM to 8 PM....:), and you cannot see anymore the mountain. you can from other signts but not from here anymore, but the snow is gone...:D Novembre....souvent gris, les arbres ont perdu leurs feuilles, par contre j'aimais bien l'effet des branches dénudées qui s'entremêlent, c'était aussi mon premier film couleur que je développais moi-même, le seul en autant que je me souvienne....plusieurs de ces photos sont verdâtres...ce qui dans ce cas ci ne change pas grand-chose.....:)
November, often it is grey and damp, and tree are bare, leaves are gone, but somehow I found this tree with its branches , big and small, intertwined, were giving me a nice thing to shoot, it was also my first and only color film that I developed, most of the pics do have a greenish tint, not very apparent here...photoshop and fall did the job....:) |
